No, I don't see any I/O errors in the system log. I'll keep an eye on it.
About the space, you're right, not much space for the clone to grow, but I can clean up the drive and get rid of things, so that should work for now. I don't have an external FW drive to use, and I think I'll store a copy of the clone on a networked Mac too. Ken
