Migration assistant from Samba drive?
Hi,
If I use SuperDuper to create a backup of my entire OSX machine (Macbook Pro, only a single HD). Can I put the image onto my WindowsXP machine, format my HD, reinstall OSX and then use 'Migration Assistant' with my SuperDuper image to get my Mac back to where it is now (i.e. all Apps, Personal Files, Settings etc.)? The reason I ask is that I have managed to shrink my partition and want to get it back to full size without losing my apps and data and am thinking about using the above method. Cheers, Bram |

Hi, Bram. I don't believe that OSX will allow you to use an image "file" as the source for a migration. Although you can try, it's likely to fail.
I'd suggest using the method in the User's Guide for an alternate restore (with Disk Utility) instead.

Hi Dnanian,
Thanks for the reply, but I was under the impression that such a restore using DiskUtility is not possible when the image resides on a Samba share (i.e. my WinXP machine), since you cannot mount such a share when you boot from the OSX install disk? The reason I am having this problem is that I do not have a USB/Firewire drive on which to put the image. Cheers, Bram |

Let me suggest, then, that you partition your drive. On one partition put a minimal install of OSX. Then, you can install SD! from there and do your restore with full SMB access.

Hi,
But then I will be stuck with 2 partitions when I want to get back to a single partition using my entire 75Gb HD. Is there any way of me achieving this? Cheers for all of your help. Bram |

Well, it's possible you could put together a Bootable CD with what you need using BootCD, but the Tiger compatible version is only available in Beta. Other than that, you'd need something you could create a bootable partition with... if you can't get at your share, it's going to be difficult to restore, and the best way I can think of is to use a partition, whether internal or external.
