I too am having failed backups. They stall and ultimately freeze the computer.

I'm disappointed that Dave Nanian, in email to me, says "we've never seen this problem" and then I find threads in this discussion group where many are having the same problem.

I've used this utility for some time with good success; it's disappointing that now it doesn't work and all you can do is blame us, our computers, our backup disks, etc.

We haven't seen this problem here. Every case I've seen so far has been due to errors on the drives or devices, "Amerrican" -- we can only work as well as the environment we're in!

SD stalling for me as well

I updated tonight to 2.5 because I plan on upgrading to Leopard, after I made a clone of my current drive. But I can't. Twice I've tried copying over the drive to an external firewire drive. The first time it copied over about a 1/5th of the drive and then stalled, no more files were being copied. I still had access to my computer, nothing was frozen. I had no apps running, I wanted the copying to be as smooth as possible.

I wiped the destination drive and tried again, this time about a 1/3 of the way in SD hangs, no more files are copying over. I'm able to quit the program fine, and I have access to my computer.

You wrote earlier that someone else had the same problem, and they sent you their log, which showed that their source drive has some damage. I haven't optimized my drive in over a year, so I'm going to do so and see if this is the cure. I'll post again afterwards to see if it changed anything.

Macbook Pro Core Duo
2.0 ghz / 2 gigs ram
100gb HD
OS X 10.4.1
no antivirus software running
am going to run techtool deluxe before my next attempt at copying.

We've seen cases where the status display updates, but files are still being copied. Please allow it to run to make sure that things really aren't copying, and drop me a note at the support email address.
