You were exactly right. Now a follow up question. The folder I found in my /Volumes directory was a partial copy of my backup drive (that is created and updated by SuperDuper! This is my backup drive, not to be confused with the 200gb drive that I am currently imaging files to. What could I have done to get these files copied there?
