Intel Macs can boot from APM partitioned drives. But Apple's transitioning to GUID, so if you can use GUID, might as well...
Naming the backup the same as the original is usually just done when you need to start from it. It ensures that aliases resolve to the "new" volume rather than the original one when both are present at startup time.
