Can't boot from Clone
I recently upgraded from Sierra to Mojave. Before doing so, I cloned my Macintosh HD (an SSD) to a partition on a USB3 drive (spinning disk). All seemed to go well. But now, for reasons that are complicated and don't really matter, I need to boot from that backup.
The backup disk is available in the Startup Disk System Preference, but it does not show up when I restart with the option key held down. If I attempt to boot from the backup via System Preferences the machine works and works and seems to be accessing the backup disk, but then finally craps out with a flashing folder icon. I gather this means that the Mac wasn't able to find a system on that disk. Needless to say, there is a system there. Is there anything I can do to get it to boot into Sierra? Many thanks to anybody who can offer a suggestion! Steve |

Try unplugging the drive, then getting to the boot menu (option power on), then attaching the drive.

Your suggestion got me past my mystery -- thank you. I was starting to suspect that Mojave, or my Mac Pro (Late 2013) and Mac Mini (Late 2014), had a shortcoming with USB. Success with your suggestion corroborates my suspicion regarding Mojave.
I had been using an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro since the Snow Leopard days, using FireWire 800, without issue all the way up to Mojave. It still runs fine, although it is rather slow and noisy by current standards. It's replacement is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro using USB 3, formatted with APFS and partitioned with HFS+. I opted for HFS+ because I read that HFS+ performs better with disk drives, as opposed to SS drives. |

Well, we've been encouraging use of APFS, since while it might be slower, it's more flexible, and is required under Catalina, so you might as well get used to it now...
