Backup user files to PC server

Hi,

I'm trying to backup user files to a disk image that I am directing to a PC server.
I can write to the PC server fine.
I can do the above function fine to the Mac hard drive.
However, when I try to backup the user files to the disk image on the PC server, SD tells me that it failed to mount the disk.

Heres the log:

Well, in this case, it won't let us create the image due to a permission issue on the server. It needs to be read/write for all...

I don't quite get it...

Dave,

The server volume IS read/write for the user in question.
Is the server capable of hosting a Mac .dmg file?

Well, you'd probably want to use a .sparseimage (read/write), and yes -- it's perfectly capable as long as it's not FAT32. But, the server is not read/write for 'root' or the console user...

Just had this same problem backing up a .sparsebundle image to a Windows home server machine.

I fixed it by first creating the sparsebundle locally on the MAC disk, stopping the backup(as I would not have had enough space otherwise!!) and then locating the file on the mac and copying it over to the server and pointing SD to the same location as to where I copied the file to on the server and restarting the backup again.... and it seems to be backing up fine now.
hope that helps
Piers

I think you'll find that Disk Utility -- which, of course, we use to create the sparse bundle -- fails the same way. It seems to be an issue with the way Snow Leopard interacts with "older" server network implementations...

point noted I guess that since my defection to mac, Ive come across so many annoying bugs with the networking side....incorrect metrics for the networking interface, meaning that higher bandwidth, lower latency connection will not get used through to inability to unmount shares (aka disk still in use!!) through to poor handling of shares within windows environments. This one, I guess, will just have to be added to the already long list of irritating 'things'.. thansk for the reply dave maybe just ignorance on my part though...... thanks for the reply dave
