I believe a volume must have a GUID partition...
I believe a volume must have a GUID partition scheme if you want to be able to boot it on an Intel Mac. The volume is readable on (IIRC) any Mac running Tiger or later, but only boots on Intel...

As an experiment, I ran DiskWarrior 4.2 on my backup volume. It found some minor problems and fixed them.

I just read in October MacWorld (p. 88) that sparse image files grow as needed, but they don't shrink when files are deleted. You have to use the hdiutil command in Terminal to reclaim the space.
