Question System crash on first backup attempt

Hello. I just downloaded SuperDuper! yesterday after reading all of the rave reviews. Seems like a great match for the Maxtor One Touch II drive I just bought for backups. But.... about an hour into the backup process I keep getting an ugly system crash - gray screen and a message telling me that I need to restart the computer. I've seen this a few times in the past but nothing as consistent as this. I've tried to complete the backup three of four times now and the crash always happens about an hour in with the SuperDuper progress bar about 95% of the way across. I've included below the log file from tonight's attempt. I have an iMac G5 20", 1.5GB, 160GB internal drive with only 50GB used. I'm attempting to copy it to an 80GB partition on the Maxtor.

Thanks. Hope you can help!

Chris

Hi, Chris. Ugly system crashes are always ugly. Let's get it taken care of.

It's important to recognize that this is called a "Kernel Panic", and is caused when kernel-level (very low-level) drivers or extensions note some kind of trouble at a low level and stop the system before it can do damage. So, while it looks "bad", it's better than continuing!

It's also important to note that SuperDuper! runs at a very high level. So, while it can *trigger* a kernel panic in a driver or kernel extension just by using your I/O subsystems a lot, it can't be the *cause* of the panic.

So -- you need to look beyond SuperDuper! for the real problem. Typically, this kind of thing is due to a poorly written file-trapping extension like Norton AntiVirus. Do you have an anti-virus program installed?

If not, if you could send your panic.log -- which you'll find off the top of the boot drive in /Library/Logs -- to me at the support address, I'll take a look and see if I can figure out what's crashing.

Here's the panic.log from the crash last night. Let me know if you can make anything of this.

Thanks

Chris

Well, it's saying that your ATA driver -- the ones controlling the hard disks -- are crashing. That's pretty unusual: did you install your own drives, Chris -- and if so, did you use cable select?

Sounds ugly. The internal drive is the standard 160MB that comes with the base iMac. Never touched it. Maybe a call to Apple is in order.....

Perhaps, cabo. Is it consistent -- can you repeat it?

It has happened a couple of times over the past few months but the only consistent time it happens is at end of an SD backup.

Well... a few times over a few months is not terribly reproducible... you can try to get help from Apple, but I'm not sure they'll be terribly useful, because you're not going to be able to reproduce it at will.

I don't think this is a common issue, because we haven't seen it here before, but that said some iMacs have issues with the midplane. Maybe they'll have some ideas when you call -- it's worth a try.

Did you get the crashing problem resolved, cabo? If your system is still under warranty or has AppleCare coverage you might take it to an Apple Store or authorized service center to have extended diagnostic tests run on it, if that's feasible for you. I've been successful getting a few different hardware issues with both a rev. A and rev. B iMac G5 repaired, sometimes needing to convince Apple there really was a problem. Having a reliable system is certainly worth the persistence and patience to me.
