Disk repair not working repair permissions taking longer than normal
Hi Dave, case 74594
I decided to move this issue to the forums in case anyone else has the same issue. After a long night of restoring I finally got the sparse image to restore to my new hard drive and leopard booted just fine. I wanted to check disk speed so I went to do some repair disk permissions. this does take some time, but on my other drive it usually gets passed the "reading the permissions database" fairly quickly and then trudges along. Now its stuck on that task for a long time. I haven't let it run for an hour, but its been many minutes with no movement. I then wanted to do a disk repair, just to see what would happen. I booted from my OS X disk and proceeded to the disk utilities. When I went to do a disk repair I get "drive could not be unmounted" in red text. Any suggestions other than restore it again and see what happens? Do I need to do a Time Machine Backup as well? I don't really want to. Is there a log file I could post? Thanks. Repair permissions in Leopard is very slow, so that's not unexpected.
As far as "Drive could not be unmounted" goes, I don't know why that would be, if you're started up from the DVD. I'd simply power off your Mac and try again a few times. No: no need to restore again.

Update
I rebooted using the osx DVD holding down the "C" key this time.
Repair disk and repair permissions worked in the normal time. Which is a long time. the repair permissions task was taking a really long time. my machine takes about 26-30 minutes. when i first tried it after the restore it was hanging for a long time. over 20 minutes on just reading permissions. Dave, even though we were doubling up on the emails, I wanted to post on here just in case someone else had a similar issue. |

I think it'll moderate over time, as your caches regenerate, etc...
