Choosing size of backup partition/drive in APFS world

Hi,

Prior to APFS, it was pretty straight forward to choose the size of the backup/partition - same size as the source.

With APFS, what is a good size to choose? I am starting to see failures with out of space message on my daily backup of my boot drive. When the boot drive and backup drives are exactly same size.

Thanks
