Using Bootable SSD and Setup Assistant With New Mac Mini

I have a refurbed 2018 Mac Mini arriving on Monday. It is replacing a 2012 Mac Mini currently running OS Sierra.

For the past 2 years I have used an external USB 3.0 Samsung T3 SSD 256GB as the boot drive for the 2012 Mac Mini. Dave kindly assisted me by providing instructions for creating the external boot drive.

My idea: Attaching the bootable SSD via USB 3.0 to the 2018 Mac Mini prior to its first startup. Then use Setup Assistant to transfer everything from the SSD to my new Mac Mini. Is this possible to do without any possible downsides?

As long as the OS in the new mini is newer than the OS on the backup, that's fine.

Great. The old Mini is running Sierra and the new one is presumably running Mojave.

Sorry for the delay in replying. . . For some reason I didn't receive an alert email. I've updated my alert preferences.
