Can't boot from external HD

I am using SD 2.1.4 (v82) on a new MacBook Pro running Leopard (10.5.1) with a brand new OWC external HD. I chose 'Backup - all files' and the backup completed with no errors and made the drive bootable. I tried booting off this drive, connected individually via FW800 and USB2 with no luck. I get the Apple logo and the spinning graphic and it never gets passed this point. Could this be an issue with SD not being fully compatible with Leopard? Or is there something else I should try?
