It's so hard to say. If the files aren't damaged on the source (which is easy to test), then there's something going on with the destination. Whether that's physical damage to the NAS drive, networking issues, protocol issues, etc -- I just don't know.
As a primary backup, I definitely prefer a bootable FireWire drive.
