Boot problem on FW drive

After reading through the discussions on this topic, I didn't solve my problem.

I have two iMac G5 (17" & 20") PPC with OSX 10.4.11.
The internal hard disk on one is dead, so I cloned the other imac to use it to startup the second one.

The only firewire drive I could find on this holiday weekend in Quebec is a Western Digital My Book (1To), It says on their website that although it is possible to boot from it, they will not give any support on how to do so. I got the same reply by phone.

It shows in system preference as a choice of startup disk.
It shows in disk utility.
Will not show by starting with Option.
The disk is partitioned Apple and formatted Mac os extended (journaled).

What else can I do ?

Thank you.....

Actually, MyBook drives will not work as startup volumes on Power PC Macs. Their knowledge base pretty clearly indicates this is the case (and it's confirmed by many other users).

You can still restore, though, using alternative methods -- see the User's Guide...

Thank you and...

Thank you for the quick reply. I will stop working for nothing.
Can you suggest a drive that would suit my needs.

I appreciate your kind help.

Joanne

I suggest a number of drive(s) in the User's Guide. Basically, I've tested and recommend (note -- ALL FIREWIRE, not USB, which cannot be used to start up a Power PC Mac):
  • LaCie (2big is especially nice)
  • Seagate FreeAgent
  • Apricorn
  • G-Drive
  • OWC
  • WiebeTech
  • Maxtor OneTouch III

Hello,

I am about to add another desktop HD to my hardware setup.

I was looking at either this particular LaCie HD (which seems to be suggested by David and of which I like the design) or this particular Maxtor OneTouch IV Plus HD (which is as the "IV" version not explicitly suggested but of which I particularly like the ability to run the button backup method).

Can anyone confirm that either of these drives allow for bootable SD! backups?

Thanks

Jo*

Thanks Dave.

One suggestion in this matter. Since people want to make sure the drives they purchase will work properly with SD! in all aspects (of which the ability of being bootable seems to me among the most important) why not dedicate a post to compatibility issues where SD! users can share their experiences with particular hardware.

Just an idea...
