This usually indicates a structure failure on the original drive. Boot from your original Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility from the Utilities or Installer application menu (depending on the disk version).
Select the drive, then the Disk First Aid tab, and use the right-hand buttons to repair the drive (not permissions). Once done, boot back and give it another try.
