Archiving a SD! backup
Hi, under Tiger I performed daily smart updates incase of HDD failure, I did the last one yesterday morning. My MB has a 160g HDD with just under 100g used, the SD! backup lives on it's own partition on a firewire external HDD of the same size.
Last night I upgraded my MB to leopard, to my surprise everything went OK! I'm not sure I want to use TM just yet as I just don't trust it, so (once the Leopard version comes out) I plan to continue with SD! (Cu I know and trust it). Thing is I don't want to overwrite my old Tiger backup, incase for some reason I need to go back to using it, but I would like to continue using the external HDD for Leopard SD! backups. so I want to backup the tiger backup! Ideally I don't want to have to buy a 2nd HDD so can my tiger backup be archived in another way? Say to DVD's or as a much much smaller file? The main criteria for the backup of the backup is that I must be able to "clone" it back onto my MB should the need arise. Thanks for any help. |

I think you really do need to get another drive. Don't try to back up your backup from Leopard!

You might be right. Or.....
I had the smart idea to day to strip out all my movies and music from the Tiger backup so it would fit on an old 80g external HDD I have. Then all I had to do was boot up from the Tiger backup and make another SD! clone of it onto the smaller drive. But a Leopard machine won't boot from a Tiger clone, so that idea went out the window! I've been working with Leopard all day today and so far have not found anything that won't work with it (even Parallels), so I figure run with Leopard for the time being with no clone backup, just manual data backup along the way, then when the SD! Leopard version is ready dump the Tiger backup and carry on as normal. Have you guys decided if we need to pay again for the Leopard version or if it'll be a free upgrade? |

It'll be a free update, Steve.
