I made a backup onto the LaCie from the G5 and lo and behold - starting the G5 with the option key held, no sign of the LaCie. I then hooked to the G5 up a previous SD backup of the G5 on an Avastor drive - no problem, disk recognised, and started up fine.

Connecting the Avastor to the G4, the machine was perfectly happy to use the SD backup from the G5 as a startup disk. It all points to the LaCie drive being a total non-starter, as it were!
