howto backup via usb than smart update over the network

hi. i didn't find this topic covered here or in the manual. if it has been covered previously, please point me in the right direction.

i've successfully used sd to backup over my network to a sparse image file. the one downside to this technique for me is that the inititial backup takes a very long time... over 24 hours.

i was wondering if it is possible to do the following:

1) perform an initial backup to a sparse image on a locally connected usb drive.
2) move the usb drive to a network server.
3) perform smart updates via the network

i'm wondering specifically, if i can get sd to the neat trick of mounting the image for the smart update automatically. this is essential for doing the smart updates as an automated "cron" task.

thanks for your help!

- josh
