Backup fails - drive full - after migrating to Photos.app
After installing 10.10.3, and converting my iPhoto library, my first backup failed when my external drive filled up. The external is the same size as the internal. I'm guessing that the iPhoto Library and Photos Library do not share files via hard links on the external drive, and that's why it filled up. Is that true? Is there any way to work around that other than deleting one of these libraries from my internal drive?

No, the problem is that the "new" versions of the files were encountered before the "old" versions. As such, the new versions were copied and - since the hard link is "known" - tracked. But we never got to the point where we could hard link the "old' version to the "new" one.
An erase-then-copy will clear things up, after which you can go back to Smart Update.

Thank you. I'll have to wait a week to try this since this drive has already returned to its offsite location.

An erase then copy worked great. Thanks again!
