Updating Internal Drive to SSD

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra with a mechanical OEM drive. I also have a reliable external bootable clone on an OWC drive. Do you see any issues with the following strategy:

Install the new SSD in the laptop; Boot from the external clone, connected to the laptop via FW 800; format the SSD internal drive via Disk Utility; Clone via SuperDuper from external to the internal SSD.

This seems simple enough....any caveats?

The SSD may not be boot compatible with the laptop, but you'l find out. Do ensure that the SSD is properly formatted AND partitioned...

Thanks, David. The SSD is an OWC Mercury Electra 1.0TB, specifically listed as compatible with my model; so I am expecting it to be bootable. Appreciate your prompt responses as always. Assuming compatibility, the strategy of cloning to the newly formatted and partitioned internal SSD would be fine as long as the external source is a good existing clone?
