Question updating files

Perhaps this is beyond the capability of the program, and rightfully so, but I work on a laptop on occasion on a genology program that my wife maintains on the G-4. Ideally I would like to keep the laptop current with the G-4 and also be able to make changes to the fiie on the laptop and then update the G-4. It obviously will not work to simply link the files on the laptop and transfer to the G-4 because that could eliminate changes that were made on the G-4 but not on the laptop. Is there a way this could be done with SD - I am very satisfied with it's use to maintain a backup copy on an outboard HD so no complaint about the program, just trying to stretch it a bit. Thanks.
