Backup not creating a mirror image after major changes?

Hi,

First, thanks for an indispensable piece of software!

So the question: a client of mine is a photography instructor and at my urging, she recommends that her students use SuperDuper. The problem she encounters is that, according to her, when some of her students make massive changes to their main drive (renaming lots of files, moving lots of files/folders) that the resulting backup of the drive is larger than the original. Apparently some of the empty/moved files and folders on the backup aren't deleted or something like that.

My understanding is that SD always make a mirror of the drive; is it possible that after a lot of changes that the resulting backup drive will not be a mirror?

Seems unlikely to me, but I'm trying to help her keep her students properly backed-up!

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I did take a look at that before posting, but the part I saw seemed to have to do with the backup drive being temporary filling up. These students of my client say that the backup drive winds up being different than the drive being backedup.

If I missed something in the User Guide about this could you quote it or point me a little more directly to what I need to know? I'm trying to keep my client and her students SuperDuper users and I'm trying to figure out what to tell them.

I can't see how that could happen (save for shared Time Machine data, some differences in Spotlight information, or not using Smart Update). I'd suggest having them send in a log showing the error using the "Send to shirt pocket" button, with "Error during copy" as the issue type. Put in a brief description of the problem as well.
