I guess this should be a simple question.

Buying a new mac.

How do I transfer the drive that I have been backing up from my present mac to the mac that I want to get?

Assuming that I have backing it up as a bootable drive and the present mac is a leopard of course.

When you start up the new Mac for the first time, it'll ask you if you want to "copy from another Mac". Point that at the backup, and it'll bring in your applications and data.

Do I need to hook up the external to a firewire or regular USB?

Edit: can you clarify on point to the backup. Are you saying the "HD" on the backup or just the actual backup itself?

Either FireWire or USB should work with Leopard, but FireWire is faster.

I'm not sure what you mean by the ""HD" on the backup". You'll be selecting the volume where the bootable backup is stored...
