Okay, 2 questions...

I have always used Carbon Copy Cloner, and recently was told about SuperDuper! and how amazing and better it was, so I decided to give it a try.

But I am running into a little problem... Well, first off, I should ask, just to make sure... If I make a back up of all files, I can use the external to boot, right? It makes a copy of the entire system?

Okay, but here is my problem... I run the back up of all files, 500gb external, 320 internal, I get 89gbs into the back up, and it tells me the external is full, which only had 40kb left on it. Now, I have never seen this before every doing a back up, so this morning I started running it again, and I saw on the SuperDuper! app that 1.73gb had been backed up, and I "got info" on the external drive, and it told me 3.98gb had been used. So now I know why it ran out of space, because it doubles what is backed up.

What am I doing wrong? Or is it with SuperDuper I need a drive twice the size to make a full back up?

Any help would be great, thanks, and so far, I really like the app. I hope I get it to work so I can continue to use it.

Thanks

Can you send in your log information, using the "Send to shirt pocket button" to support? I'd like to take a look.

Yeah, I started another one, that doesn't list everything, do you want the one I was just comparing to "Get Info" or the original one that failed? If it is the original one, how can I access that one? In a Library file somewhere? Cuz when I click on 'Show Log' it only shows the most recent.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll send it if I can.

Or do you want me to run a whole new one until it fails and then send that log?

Here is my most recent log, but this one didn't fail, because I saw the size changing...

Are you using FileVault?

We definitely don't 'double' what's backed up, but you might be having problems because of open files on the source (or perhaps your AntiVirus). Anyway -- send me the log with the button and we'll figure it out.

You know what, I ran it a 4th time while I was sleeping lastnight and it worked fine. Well, at least it backed up and didn't run out of room. All I have to check out is if it is bootable and we are good to go.

I do have one question, will I use Smart Update in say, a few days to just back up what is different? Like the way Time Machine works?

Thanks!

It'll update the backup with the changes, yes -- but it's not "like Time Machine" in the sense that we're not keeping the old versions around.

Okay, so if I run Smart Update, it will only back up the changes, but keep the same system? So it will still be bootable, everything will be the same, with the changes?

Instead of like Time Machine making changes, it saving both version, and adding like that.

Am I correct?

Thanks

Correct. Keep using "Smart Update" with "Backup - all files" and the result will continue to be bootable.
