Error: No space left on device

I'm trying to create a safety clone for my G5 from my internal 160gb hd onto an 80gb external fw maxtor. Get info shows 104gb used on the internal drive. My home folder is 88gb. I'm thinking that since the safety clone doesn't copy the user files that I am only trying to copy 104-88=16gb. Am I wrong?

It's going to share a number of applications, too, if you choose that script.

Remember, too, that you need to leave enough free space on the Safety Clone to hold temporary files, anything you're going to install over there, and VM files and the like. Don't be too stingy with the space.

If you want to know exactly how big it's going to be, run a sample one into an image (even a sparse image)...

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'm using Safety clone - shared users and applications. If an image is as large as the clone itself, I don't have room anywhere to copy it.

Well, in general, I'd expect it to be 8-12GB... that works well for me, with quite a few apps installed...

Is an image of a clone the same size as the clone? What's the advantage of an image?

Here's a copy of the log of one of the failed attempts if that helps. Thanks again for the help.

Hi, tradervic.

The problem here is pretty much exactly what it says: you're trying to copy 100GB of information to a drive that only has 76GB of space:

|07:08:24 PM|Info| Source Drive: /, name: Macintosh HD, device: /dev/disk0s3 type: hfs, OS: 10.3.8 (7U16), capacity: 148.93 GB, used: 100.93 GB, directories: 58923, files: 247075
|07:08:24 PM|Info| Target Drive: /Volumes/Maxtor Hard Drive, name: Maxtor Hard Drive, device: /dev/disk1s3 type: hfs, OS: 10.3.8 (7U16), capacity: 76.21 GB, used: 5.73 GB, directories: 44289, files: 160526

There's no real advantage of an image in your case, since you can copy directly to the drive...
