Well, I ran SD! (as well as let it run per its schedule) repeatedly these past few days, and everything appears to be OK — no more glitches, and the resulting backups
appear to be fine.

PS: The drive is a brand new LaCie, so I think it's unlikely (relatively speaking) that it's failing.
