superduper writes to sparsebundle

Why does SuperDuper write to my timecapsule HDD when I have a sparsebundle on it but won't write to it when no sparsebundle is present? (Actually, SuperDuper "sees" the sparsebundle but does not see the disk when the sparse bundle is absent.)

I'm not sure I understand the question. We can't write directly to the Time Capsule because we can't authorize appropriately against a network device in a way that will allow us to fully preserve your files, ownership, metadata, etc.

So, like Time Machine itself, we have to write to an image, as explained in "Backing up over a network" in the User's Guide...
