Erase/Copy, custom icons & Time Machine
OS is Mountain Lion
I have SD set upo to erase the backup drive and copy the HD. I had a custom icon on the backup drive but it evidently got erased too as it has converted back to the generic icon. How do I keep the custom icon? Sometime during the erase/copy Time machine asks if I want to use the backup drive with Time Machine. Every day I have to answer No. How do I get it to stick that I don't want to use it with Time Machine? Lastly, I assume Erase/Copy will create a bootable drive. I'm using 2.7.1. I see that my HD has 86.08 GB on disk and the backup has 71.82 GB on disk. Can this be correct (i.e. all files were copied and the disk is bootable)? |

The basic answer here is to use Smart Update instead.

Thanks - it's been so long since I set up SD. Now I have a new iMac and needed to set everything up again.
Any idea as to why the space needed is different? Does SD copy the Mountain Lion install/boot partition? How large is that partition? Is that the 14+ GB's difference in space? |

Caches, swap files, sleep images and the like can end up being quite large. You can review what we're not copying in the copy script if you'd like.
We do not copy the recovery volume - it is not counted in the size taken on the regular partition - it's entirely separate (and easily recreated by reinstalling the OS from the App Store).

"Caches, swap files, sleep images, etc."
The computer has been running for 16 days. So it's created 14+ GB of this in that time frame? Should they be deleted regularly and if so, then how? |

I wouldn't worry about it; these things are managed automatically by the system. Don't try to delete files like this by hand.
