Question newbie Q - error on formating external HD

Hi, I'm trying Super Duper for the first time. I bought a Maxtor one-touch specifically for Macs. I used disk utility to try to erase it and format it as Mac Os Extended Journaled. Even with a firewire, it took about 10 hours and then at the end I got an error message saying it didn't erase the "volume."
I'm not sure what this means. I copied the log below. Can anyone explain this?
Sorry if this is answered in the discussion boards elsewhere, I couldn't find a search function on this board!
Apologies and thanks!

You need to partition the drive properly for your Mac - as either GUID (for Intel) or APM (for Power PC) before you RAID it.
