Error and Partitioning Question

Hey, how's it going. I'm running 10.4.1 on my 1.5GHz Al Powerbook and I have a 200 GB (186.3 GB to be exact) external backup drive with 4 partitions: Clone, with a previous Panther clone; Sandbox, for safety clone; Backup, with a Tiger clone that I'm trying to smart update; Data, for other stuff. All the partitions on the backup drive are 46.5 GB. I'm getting a result too large error when I tried to smart update the Backup partition.

I searched the forums and it looks like the cause of the error is that I ran out of space, is that correct? The size of my installation is 36.7 GB, I would think I still would have enough space. So, I'll still have to re-partition it looks like, huh? Just for a confirmation, re-partioning will erase the data on all the partitions, correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Here's part of the log file:

Hi, offdahook84 -- it's going well, thanks!

Your problem is actually covered elsewhere in the forums, so rather than re-type and re-attach the fix, here's a link to that thread.

That should resolve the issue: let me know!

Thanks for the quick response. The script solved the problem and now I have successfully updated to 10.4.2 and thanks to you I know my data is protected. You make a superb product with excellent support. I wish more developers were like you. Thanks for making backing up a smooth experience like a really good golden trout download. Their is nothing else like it. Keep up the good work and I will continue to recommend your products. Take it easy.

Hello again, I'm getting another SVUclone Error. I since updated to Tiger 10.4.2 and I'm using the No Hotfiles script to smart update. I would appreciate it if you could let me know again what the new problem is.

Here's the SD log file:

Well, that's pretty unusual: I don't think I've seen this kind of thing with .DS_Store before. Were you adjusting properties of the root of the volume while doing your backup?

I'd restart the machine and give this another try, and if it still fails, you'll have to fix it in Terminal (because the file is going to be hidden), with the command:

Code:
sudo rm /.DS_Store
You might want to copy/paste that to make sure you get it right.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for another quick reply. I am a geek, but I'm not that advanced or idiotic enough to mess with the root or know what I'm doing in the terminal because I know very little about UNIX. A restart seemed to solve the problem this time. It was more like a force restart from a crash. I've never had a crash before, but I have had a few ever since updating to 10.4.2. The crashing first started when running Virtual PC. The screen would go dark and give me the restart your computer message. Then, this morning I got the same crash and message running Camino and iTunes. Have you had any crashes like this in 10.4.2?

None of note, no...

The command I gave would just delete a single file: the one that was indicating it was "too large" -- which is weird. If reboot fixed, great... something wacky must have been going on.
