FireWire 800 copy speed

I am doing an initial copy to a new hard disk, the copy speed is 6 to 7 MB/sec.

The setup
  • xserve g5
  • copy from internal drive (a RAID mirror)
  • copy to external drive via FireWire 800

is 7MB/sec what I should be seeing?

Thanks.

That seems about right, yes, for an initial copy.

thanks for the quick reply, and for SuperDuper being a great product.

(Although I do sometimes long for the days when I could backup my whole 10MB drive in a few minutes...... and now I am building 2TB systems.)

Yeah, those days are gone, alas: it's hard to copy 750GB in a few minutes.

I just did an initial backup of about 750GB to an external enclosure via Firewire 800 drive (2 striped SATA drives in a PRO-Z RAID enclosure) and I got around 30+ MB/s (from a Mac Pro).

I just upgraded the internal Hard Drive on my 24" iMac to a Samsung F1 750GB drive. When I did an initial SuperDuper clone to my FW800 external I was getting about 45MB/s transfer rate! wahoo!!! That's almost double what I used to get from the stock Western Digital 320GB that the iMac ships with.
