Naming New Boot Drive Questions
Hi-
I'm adding a pair of 500GB drives to my Mac Pro as the OEM 250GB drive is nearly full now. I want to make one of the new drives my startup disk, and the second a bootable backup. The OEM drive can then be erased and used as a scratch disk for Photoshop to play around in. I've read through a number of posts on this form and am pretty sure I can do this with SuperDuper! (I've been using it for a few years to backup to a FireWire drive so I know a bit about how it works), but there are a couple of steps I don't really understand. Here's where I'm up to, and what I'm unclear on: I've installed the new drives and in Disk Utility I've partitioned them Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID (1 partition), and named them 500HD and Backup. Next step, I think, is to run SuperDuper! "Backup - all files" and copy from Macintosh HD to 500HD with Option "On Successful Completion : Do Nothing". Then, if I've got it right, I have to rename 500HD (in the Finder, I guess?) as Macintosh HD ("Because applications often store references to files and folders as "aliases", and aliases have the volume name encoded in them") I'll then have 2 "Macintosh HD" volumes, and I'm not clear how I'll know which is which when it comes to rebooting the machine. The example in the User Guide Appendix doesn't seem to explain this, as it does the renaming in Disk Utility where it is part of the Partition process which erases the drive. Anyone clarify this for me? Jim |
