In this case, it sounds like the best thing to do is to create a full backup. Then, put the old drive in a case and install the new one.
Install OSX fresh to the drive using the discs that came with your Mac. During the first startup, it'll prompt you to migrate your files: do so, using either the backup or the original drive (in the case). That should do it!
