Back up user folder and then full disk on Fridays?

Maybe this is completely obvious, but I haven't sussed it out so I figured I'd throw it up here and see if anyone had an idea of how to do this.

I have an external firewire drive that I want to back up just my user folder Monday to Thursday. On Friday instead of syncing up the user folders I want to do a complete disk backup.

I set up two separate scheduled tasks, but for some reason when I run the User backup it deletes everything else *but* the User folder.

Is there a way to smart update a user folder but leave the rest of the top-level disk folders alone?

Hi, Neilio. At present, no -- Smart Update does just as described: it makes the destination exactly resemble the selections from the source. So, if you just copy the user files, the destination will only have user files on it.

Since SuperDuper! always walks the whole drive, and does it very fast, there's little to be gained by just updating user files anyway. Most of the non-user files won't change day to day, and thus won't be copied.

So, why subset?

Here's how

neilio,

Partition your external hard drive leaving one partition large enough to clone your whole drive and the second partition large enough to copy your user folder. Then set up your two backup scripts. This gives you extra protection because you will always have a current backup of your user files and a second backup that's 1 to 7 days behind.
