copy errors - copying to external LaCie FW drive

I just bought and hooked up a LaCie Quadra 500Gb external firewire drive to a new MacPro running OS X 10.4.11

I have run Disk Utility (DU) and verified that the LaCie drive and internal MacPro drive are good. I partitioned it into 3 partitions using DU. The errors were present before and after using DU.

I tried backing up my internal MacPro HD using smart update to the LaCie drive. Preparing goes OK but then I get errors every time it gets to Copying Files mode - it seems almost the instant in tries to copy to the LaCie drive.

Any help appreciated!
