Actually, system folder/file visibility is something that does happen with all programs. There are a lot of things that control that, and it changes every release.
In general, if the disk is the boot drive, those files are hidden -- otherwise, they're not. There's a file called ".hidden" that has a list of folders that can be hidden at other times, but that seems to have been deprecated/removed in Tiger, so I'm not sure if it's still supported at all... Anyway, evaluate as long as you feel is necessary... and thanks for the follow-up. Let me know if you have any other questions.
