simple starter question

I've used SuperDuper! happily for a while. Since I just replaced an internal disk with a larger one, I decided to set up my backup with a larger, external FW disk also.

It's a LaCie little disk 500 GB.

My questions: Should I format the disk before doing the SuperDuper! backup? Is there a particular format I should use?

Thanks,
Pauline

PS I have spent some time reading the manual and searching the forums/web but haven't found an answer. Sorry in advance if I've overlooked something obvious.

Yes, you should fully partition and format the drive. See this FAQ entry.

Aha, thanks, perfect. Skimmed that article before, saw "partition" and didn't think it was for me (not doing multiple partitions). Now I get it.
