As I said, if you want to put the other laptop into FireWire Target Disk Mode (hold down T during power on), you can copy directly to it. It's just a bit of a pain to have to do that every time.
As far as "portability at all times" goes, well, carrying a small external FireWire drive is not a lot more than carrying two laptops.
