Unhappy After failed backup, partition is full

I tried to clone my main partition of my internal drive onto a sparse image on my external firewire drive, but it failed. Now the main partition, which used to have 1.35 gb free, says it has zero space, and things aren't working on it.

The external firewire has other stuff on it, but it has plenty of room to contain the entire partition.

How can I get my main paritition back?

And please tell me what info you need me to provide to tell me why I couldn't do a sparse image to the firewire drive.

thanks
