Safe Login question
I can understand why safe login would be a good idea as is mentioned on the "Backup your computer for the first time page". This weekend I'm going to back up my puter for the first time (ever), and I'm wondering if safe login is needed every time, which I'm not sure how that would be done with scheduling, or just the first time you backup all files to an empty disk...?

Well, we're not actually suggesting Safe Boot. Rather, Shift during login is an easy way to prevent programs from starting when you log in... startup items and the like...
It's not entirely necessary, just an extra precaution.

Thank you - I'm kinda into extra precaution - but I read in Dr. Smokes book that when you do even a safe login, that your font caches get put in the trash, which results in all of your disabled fonts being enabled - pretty inconvenient if you have hundreds disabled - as I do. He recommends making a collection folder for your disabled fonts so that in the event of a safe boot or login, they can be disabled all at once.

Really? While he's certainly correct that the Font Cache is deleted, I don't think disabled fonts have anything to do with the font cache. Rather, disabled fonts are in a totally separate folder on the drive, at least when you use Font Book. Active fonts are in Library/Fonts, and inactive fonts are in Library/Fonts (Disabled).
Perhaps he's speaking of a different version of the OS?

I have the Tiger version of "Troubleshooting Mac OS X". I am going to take your advice and do a safe login this first time - I guess I'll find out when I reboot if my disabled fonts are enabled...!!! Thanks for your great support....

No problem, Katy. But again -- I'm not saying to "Safe Boot". I'm only suggesting logging out (not restarting) and logging in with Shift down...
