FW HD ok to leave connected

I have a 250 GB external FW HD and partitioned into 2 drives 1st is a 160 GB which is used for cloning and the other is a 73 GB which is used for backup.

My question are?

1. Is it ok to leave the external FW drive connected and mounted showing both volumes on the desktop in my day-today computer operation? One is identified as Clone and the other is Backup.

2. When I repair permissions on my internal HD is it ok to leave both of the (Clone/Backup) mounted?

3. I've read when doing a Apple Update to disconnect the Cloned Copy first, then update, is that right? Of course reparing permissions before starting the Apple update(s).

4. If I install new programs should I disconnect the Cloned Copy first, then install the new software?

Thanks,
