Help, weird ip showing up

I went to create a new script in Super Duper and when I went to select the volume under script commands, they're listed as

1-._rita's ip
2-eDrive
3-MacBook Pro
4-My Book

#2,3 and 4 are mine but I have NO IDEA what #1 is.

Anybody have any idea what ._rita's ip is?

This has me stumped.

Kate

It's something hidden, Kate, likely mounted by a program, you're using (e.g. eDrive). I wouldn't worry about it.

Isn't eDrive the partition created by TechTools? It shouldn't have created the other things. If it is TT, it can only be removed by using the TT disk (Tools > eDrive > Remove eDrive). If TT is installed in your main Applications folder (as it should be) you can run it from your (booted) SD! external drive. This way, you free up the space on your HD taken up by the unnecessary partition.

#1, though starts with a period -- an invisible system file, no???

Yes, the eDrive is the eDrive, but I was thinking that the hidden mount was being used by TT's eDrive functionality, as opposed to it being the eDrive itself.

On one of the machines I use, I have some files like that. They are all named after iPods that have been connected to the machine at one point or another. "rita's ip" is probably Rita's iPod.

The "._name" format is one that I have seen used on non-HFS filesystems to store extra HFS data (resource fork stuff?). My guess is that it means that the volume "rita's ip" is a FAT32 (or other non-HFS) formatted device and whoever was using it ended up doing something that made the OS want to store some resource data for the root folder of the filesystem. Since the ._name files are usually stored next to the main file, the file for the extra data of the root folder ends up in /Volumes instead of in the volume itself.

All the files of this kind that I have seen are all very small (82 bytes). It probably won't hurt to delete yours, but since it is so small it does not hurt much to leave it there either.

I thought of that, but expected a capital P. Can't really know without a bit more info from the user.
