system crash

Hi,
sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find a thread for it.

I have tried twice to do a full back up of internal HD to a sparce disk image on a USB2 external drive alongside other data. no other apps were running, airport off, etc...

It crashes my system, dead screen, no response from force quit. I have not seen this actually happen as on both occasions I had left the macbook to get on with it...
only option is a power button restart...

I'm running latest versions of Leopard and super duper...

any advice?
How do I get a crash log for the crash? thanks for any help, I'm pretty keen to do a back up since I have one of the fated seagate china drives witht the bad firmware and it is about a year and a half old...
cheers
