Working around a bad disk?

I have been running S.M.A.R.T. Reporter and it reports that my disk is going bad In creating a new complete backup clone, not surprisingly SD! chokes on a particular file. I dragged that file to the trash, but, equally not surprisingly, OS X chokes on emptying the file ("the file cannot be read....").

So, my question is this...is there any way to work around this so that I can create a backup clone before I bury the hard drive in the back yard and get a new one?
