Sounds like you don't have the proper version on *both* the client and server, Noel.
Try fully uninstalling on both client and server by removing both the client and the preference pane on both (turn the server *off* on the server first). Empty your trash. Then, drag and drop a fresh client on both. Start the client on both, and choose the intended use when prompted. Make sure the server is turned on when it brings up the Preference Pane. I think, once done, it'll work fine. Let me know.
