I'd suggest a 2TB external (high quality, don't get a WD external).
Please see the FAQ about storing TM and SD! backups side by side (in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the SD! forum -- Help > Frequently Asked Questions inside SUperDuper). Doesn't matter which you do first.
