Meltdown Recovery

I've been using SD for some time to create a copy of my iBook HD on an external FW drive. I have no problem booting to and running from the FW drive.

In a worst case scenario, I can see my internal HD dying altogether. Here's my question. When I install a brand new HD, where would I do the restore from? Would I install SD on the new drive and do it from there, which would mean I would already have to have an OS installed on my iBook, or would I boot to the external FW drive and restore or clone the data from there back to my HD? Which is the way to go?

-Bill
