Clone doesn't complete - Symantec autoprotect error msg

Hi there - I've tried cloning my disk to a LaCie disk but keep getting a message related to Symantec autoprotect. What do I do? It seems to be some sort of /private file. (??)

Note that I uninstalled Symantec before cloning the disk, so I no longer have the software on my Mac at all!

Any help appreciated...

Jennifer

This looks like a damaged file on the source drive. It should be fixable with Disk Utility.

Start up from your Tiger install DVD and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu (the bold one that says "Installer" next to the Apple menu at the top of the screen) or the Utilities/Tools menu (depending on the version of the disc you have). Then, use the First Aid tab to repair the drive, using the buttons on the right (NOT Repair Permissions on the left). Repeat until no problems are found, then start back up from your real drive and try again.

Ok, great, thanks - but (don't laugh) how do I start up from that disk?

You can either hold down "c" when powering on, or -- when you insert it -- run the little "Install Mac OS X" program.

Hmmm. When I pull down the Install Mac OSX menu (to the right of the Apple Menu) and look at the options for DiskUtilty, the two items ('Calculate Image Checksum'...) are both grayed out.

You seem to already be in Disk Utility, or you should check the "Utilities" or Tools menu.

Well, no: if you're where you're supposed to be, you wouldn't be able to take a screen shot. So, if you've run the little program to install OSX, it sounds like you haven't clicked the (one) button in there and authorized it. Once that's done, it'll restart and you'll be able to proceed.

Ah, ok - so if I'm at thescreen with the HUGE X (as in OSX), I should click 'Restart' button beneath the text that says 'Click the button below to restart your computer to begin the installation process.' ??

(Just being overly cautious here!)

Yes. You're not going to actually install, but you do need to get started from the CD.
