Just got an external HD and want to mirror both mine and my wifes laptops. Do I need to partition in order to put both complete HD on the one external using "back-up all files"

That's the best way to do it, Scott, Yes. (Note -- to directly write both to the same drive, you need to plug it into each machine: you can't write directly to the drive over the network, only to an image (which would still require a partition).)
